Fast neutron background in BUST for core-collapse supernova searches

Abstract

      The natural neutron background influences the maximum achievable sensitivity in most deep underground physics experiments. Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST) is a multipurpose neutrino detector. The detector BUST able to detect core collapse neutrino burst via the inverse beta decay. The irreducible background is the neutron flux present at the experimental site, since neutrons produce the same signals as neutrinos do. In this paper we discuss our technique to measure low-intensity neutron fluxes and the application of this technique to the study of the neutron background from rock at the BUST experiment.
